Logging food with the barcode scanner

The quickest way to log a packaged food is to scan its barcode. VertigoMe looks the product up in the Open Food Facts database, including its sodium. Logging food inside VertigoMe is a Premium feature.

Step 1: Open the Diet screen

  1. Tap the Monitor tab and tap the Diet card.
  2. Or tap the Food card on the Log tab ("Search or scan what you ate").

Step 2: Open the scanner

  1. In the Add Food card ("Search the USDA database, scan a barcode, or photograph your meal"), tap the barcode icon next to the search box.
  2. The first time, your phone asks for camera access. Allow it.

Step 3: Point at the barcode

  1. Hold the phone about a hand's width from the package.
  2. Keep the whole barcode inside the frame and hold still for a second or two.
  3. If the package is shiny, tilt it a little to cut the glare.

Step 4: Check and save

  1. A window opens with the product's name.
  2. Under Portion, set how much you had in grams. When the product lists a serving size you will see a hint such as "1 serving ≈ 30 g".
  3. Pick a Meal Type: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner or Snack.
  4. Check the flags and the sodium amount for that portion.
  5. Tap Add Food.

The food now appears in Today's Log, and its sodium is added to the Sodium today card on Home.

If the barcode is not found

You will see a message that the barcode is not in Open Food Facts. This is more common with small local brands. Search for the food by name instead (see "Logging food by typing it in").

If you see a lock instead of the search box

Food logging is part of Premium. The lock opens the subscription page.
