Sleep

Connecting your sleep from Apple Health (iPhone)

VertigoMe does not talk to your watch or sleep app directly. It reads from Apple Health, the white app on your iPhone with a red heart. Your watch or sleep app writes your sleep into Apple Health, and VertigoMe reads it from there.

You only need to do this once. After that, your sleep appears in VertigoMe on its own.

Step 1: Connect Apple Health

  1. Open VertigoMe.
  2. Tap the gear icon in the top-left of the screen. A drawer slides in from the left.
  3. Tap Connections.
  4. Find the Apple Health card at the top and tap Connect. If it already says Connected, skip ahead.
  5. A short VertigoMe note explains what will be read. Tap Continue.
  6. Apple's permission sheet slides up. Tap Turn On All, then Allow.
  7. If you would rather pick and choose, make sure Sleep is on before tapping Allow.

The card now says Connected.

Step 2: Check that it worked

  1. Tap the Monitor tab at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Scroll to the Sleep card.
  3. If your watch or sleep app tracked last night, you should see it here.

If the card is empty, sleep can take an hour or two to reach Apple Health after you wake up. Try again later in the morning. VertigoMe looks back over the last week of sleep in Apple Health, so a night that arrives late is still picked up.

What VertigoMe reads about sleep

Sleep duration, sleep stages, how often you woke, when you fell asleep and when you woke up. VertigoMe also works out a sleep score and sleep efficiency from your time in bed and time asleep. If two sources record the same night, for example an Apple Watch and a sleep app, VertigoMe merges them so the night counts once.

If something went wrong

The permission sheet never appeared

Your iPhone may remember an earlier answer. Change it in Settings instead:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone (the grey gear, not the one inside VertigoMe).
  2. Tap Apps, then Health.
  3. Tap Data Access & Devices.
  4. Tap VertigoMe.
  5. Switch things on or off as you like.

The card says Connected but I see no sleep

Open the Health app, tap Browse, then Sleep. If that is empty, the source app (Apple Watch, AutoSleep, Pillow and so on) has not sent anything to Health yet.

A wearable is already giving me sleep

If you connected Oura, Garmin, Polar or WHOOP, sleep comes from that device instead. To change it, see Choosing which device gives VertigoMe each piece of data.

A note on privacy

VertigoMe only reads what you allow. It writes back two things to Apple Health: your finished spins (as Dizziness) and periods you log in VertigoMe (as menstrual flow). Your sleep stays in Apple Health and in your VertigoMe account.
